Therapeutic Riding

Picture

ATRC's Therapeutic Riding program focuses on teaching adapted riding skills to participants to whatever level is safe and most beneficial for each individual and their respective physical, cognitive, social, and emotional goals. While mounted therapeutic riding lessons focus on teaching specific skills related to riding a horse or pony, other benefits include improved core strength, improved balance, improved fine and gross motor skills, social skills, and communication skills.

Therapeutic Riding Lessons Offered:
Hour Private Lessons
Half Hour Private Lessons
Hour Group Lessons- 2-5 riders per group
Half Hour Group Lessons- 2-5 riders per group

Half hour lessons
are designed for participants who are beginners/ just starting to ride, younger riders, riders who are lower functioning, who can only focus for 20-30 minutes at a time, or are looking for specific physical and cognitive goals to be met. Volunteers will have horse tacked up and ready to go, rider will mount the horse, complete a warm up, a lesson activity, and a cool down before dismounting.

Full hour lessons are designed for riders who are more independent, have higher ability levels, can focus for longer periods of time, and are looking to meet social and emotional goals by creating a horse-human connection from the ground up. Rider will arrive at the farm, learn how to catch their horse, groom and tack, warm up on the ground with ground work activities, and then learn mounted riding skills. Following the lesson activity, riders will take care of their horse and put them away.

Group lessons, both half hour and hour long, are designed for individuals who are have social goals they would like to meet on top of any physical and cognitive goals they may have. Groups consist of 2-5 riders and will be carefully selected by the ATRC Staff so that the specific group consists of riders with similar goals, who are similar in age and riding/ ability level, and who have similar availability.

Please note that group lessons are not guaranteed, and will solely be offered by the instructor. All new participants will be enrolled in one session of private lessons to begin learning adapted riding skills before they are considered for group lessons!
