A Legacy of Care & Future of Possibility

Our Story

Albany Therapeutic Riding Center was founded in 1981 with a clear, compassionate purpose: to create opportunities for individuals with disabilities to experience growth, independence, and connection through therapeutic riding. Established by Chris Lehman, a PATH Certified Riding Instructor, ATRC began as a small nonprofit rooted in the belief that the relationship between horse and rider can be a powerful catalyst for change.

Over the years, that belief has grown into a trusted and impactful organization serving New York’s Capital Region. ATRC has expanded its programs, strengthened its team of certified instructors, and built a dedicated network of volunteers and supporters who make this work possible. Each lesson is thoughtfully designed to support physical, emotional, and cognitive development, while honoring the individuality of every rider.

Today, ATRC continues to provide high-quality therapeutic riding and equine-assisted services in a welcoming and supportive environment. The organization remains grounded in its founding values while continuing to grow its reach and deepen its impact. Every rider, volunteer, and supporter plays a role in carrying out this mission.

The Vision Behind ATRC

Albany Therapeutic Riding Center was founded in 1981 by Chris Lehman, whose vision continues to guide the organization today. As a Certified Riding Instructor and board president, Chris was deeply committed to creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to build confidence, strength, and independence through therapeutic riding.

Chris was the heartbeat of ATRC, dedicating countless hours to caring for the horses and facilities, leading lessons, and growing the organization through outreach and fundraising. An Albany native educated at SUNY Delhi, she worked as a licensed veterinary technician and microlab instructor, bringing both knowledge and compassion to her work. With more than 34 years of experience and advanced certification in cognitive and physical disabilities, she shaped a program grounded in expertise and care.

Known for her compassion and dedication, Chris built a community where riders feel supported, encouraged, and empowered. Her legacy lives on in every lesson and every life touched through ATRC.
